Facts Page
The National Ocean Sciences Bowl has been promoting
ocean science education and literacy among high school students across
the nation since 1998 through the guidance and support of the Consortium
for Oceanographic Research and Education (CORE).
Since 2000, the Shore Bowl has
engaged students in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania in this initiative,
generating fun and camaraderie, as well as:
- Broadening the awareness and understanding of high
school students, teachers and parents of the latest scientific research
on the oceans
- Creating an ideal opportunity to expose teachers
to the value and excitement of using the oceans as a tool for both disciplinary
and cross-disciplinary science education, and
- Providing an opportunity for university oceanographic
research programs to develop links with pre-college communities (i.e.,
IMCS and you!)
Who?
Enthusiastic and motivated high school students in grades 9-12 in the
New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania are eligible to participate inn the
Shore Bowl. Each team must have a coach, who serves as the lead point
of contact for the team and is responsible for the team’s compliance
with all competition rules and regulations.
What?
Competitions consist of preliminary round-robin matches, followed by a
series of single or double-elimination matches for the top teams from
each of the round robin divisions. Each timed match
consists of:
- A 6-minute buzzer-style round of rapid-fire multiple-choice
and short answer questions
- 2 written team challenge questions
- Another 6-minute buzzer-style round of rapid-fire
multiple-choice and short answer questions
Topics covered during the competition include biology,
chemistry, physics and geology of the oceans, as well as navigation, geography,
history, literature and current events.
How?
Interested schools are expected to contact the regional coordinator to
register for the event, and to identify a coach and team comprised of
5 students. Teams prepare for the competition using resources suggested
by the coordinator and the NOSB, and are required to be completely familiar
with the competition
rules and regulations prior to the event. The winner of the Shore
Bowl earns the right to compete in the National Ocean Sciences Bowl, all
expenses paid.
