Highlights

  • IMCS congratulates Rich Styles for earning an appointment as an Assistant Professor at the University of South Carolina. According to GPO SRC records, Rich is the first GPO graduate to land a tenure-track faculty appointment. We expect Rich will be joining the USC Gamecocks sometime this fall. Sorry Sybil.
  • Josh Kohut and Mike Crowley will be on NBC 10 Philadelphia again this Thursday as they do a story on the uses of CODAR surface current RADAR and satellite imagery for Coast Guard search and rescue operations.
  • Judith Weis and Dr. Peddrick Weis, of UMDNJ, were recently at the Delaware Inland Bays doing field work for a project on effects of CCA-treated wood boardwalks on tidal marshes. Next week, Judith will be off to Puerto Rico to participate in a review of their Sea Grant program, and the following week back to Washington DC for an EPA committee.
  • Rob Cermak will be departing from IMCS, Friday, June 1st to begin work at the School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences in Fairbanks, Alaska.   • Kate Hedstrom's last day at IMCS will be June 15. Meetings Attended

  • Drs. Nalini Sankar and Qizhong (George) Guo presented a paper entitled "Use of Chemical Tracers to Detect the Presence of Sanitary Sewage in Storm Water Outfall" at the World Water & Environmental Resources Congress on May 21, 2001 in Orlando, FL. This paper describes the work on Deal Lake, NJ that was sponsored by the Brookdale-Rutgers Ocean Center, IMCS.
  • Jennifer Francis chaired and organized the 6th AMS (American Meteorological Society) Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography in San Diego, CA, during the week of May 14 - 18. She also presented a paper entitled "Satellite-Observed Changes in Energy Advection within the Arctic."
  • Yonghua Chen presented a poster at the 6th AMS Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography in San Diego, CA, entitled "Arctic Surface Temperature: A Comparison Among Satellite Retrievals and Conventional Observations." Jim Miller and Jennifer Francis were co-authors on this paper.
    Fred Grassle gave one of the keynote speeches at the Opening Conference of the Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography on May 25-27.
  • Peter Rona was the invited keynote speaker at the 4th International Symposium on Eastern Mediterranean Geology 21-25 May 2001 in Isparta, Turkey. His topic was recent advances in seafloor hydrothermal research.
  • Peter Rona presented an invited paper, "Slope instability on the Hatteras and New Jersey segments of the U.S. Atlantic continental margin," on May 29th at the American Geophysical Union 2001 Spring Meeting in Boston. The paper supports the IMCS/NURC role in development of the U.S. National Ocean Exploration program implemented by NOAA/NURP.
