Highlights
- The current (Winter 2001) issue of "Cross Section,"
the magazine of research at the Graduate School-New Brunswick,
features an article, "The Other Final Frontier: Exploring
Inner Space," that reports on Peter Rona's research and teaching
on seafloor hydrothermal systems and continental margin processes.
Amy Freestone, last year's winner of the outstanding senior award
in marine sciences, received an NSF Graduate Research Fellowship
for 3 years. Amy is pursuing a Ph.D. in the Graduate Group in
Ecology at the University of California, Davis.
- Bonnie McCay was appointed to a new Federal Advisory Committee
on Marine Protected Areas, NOAA/ DOC.
Meetings Attended
- Judith S. Weis spent several days last week visiting the University
of California at Davis, where she gave a seminar to the Environmental
Toxicology program, and one at the Bodega Marine Lab. Later this
week, she will be at the AIBS meeting in Washington, where some
notable marine biologists will be speaking - Jane Lubchenco, Nancy
Rabalais, and Joy Zedler.
- News from Tuckerton: Tom Grothues, Stacy Hagan and Gregg Sakowicz
presented papers at the joint meeting of the Tidewater and Mid-Atlantic
Chapters of the American Fisheries Society in Easton, MD on March
1-3.
- On March 21st, Bonnie McCay gave an invited seminar on Privatization
and Management of Natural Resources at the Boalt Hall School of
Law, University of California, Berkeley.
Let's Welcome
- Daniel Grzebyk is a new postdoctoral associate working with
Costantino Vetriani, Lee Kerkhof and Paul Falkowski on phytoplankton
evolution. Daniel arrived at IMCS on March 1st from La Rochelle,
France, where he had a research position at CREMA. Please take
a minute to introduce yourself and say hello to Daniel (room 303F,
ext. 336).
