The seawater and flume facility is made up of 5 flumes,11 separate cubicles with seawater tables and running seawater, a greenhouse room and three outside tanks. There are two different types of flumes available for research, one racetrack flume and four annular flumes.

Seawater is collected from coastal locations and transported to the Marine and Coastal Sciences building in a tanker truck (3,000-gallon capacity) built specifically for that purpose. Seawater is transferred to a 10,000 gallon capacity settling tank, then passed through a sand filter to remove large particles and organisms and stored in three 8,000 gallon capacity holding tanks. Seawater can be passed through various sized filters as a particular project dictates.
