Notable Scientific Results of the day
|
Spent the morning diagnosing the inverter problem on the Caleta, then loaded her up for
test run. Left the dock at 1:00 PM for a 3 hour tour. MiniBat and ADCP data
was collected from Thermistor A1 to A4 and back. Progress was monitored from shore
using LEO-NET to display the shipboard data on shore with a 4 second delay. Waves
were reaching 8 ft at the offshore end of the transect when we decided to turn back to
shore. Even in rough weather, recovery of the SWATH ADCP was a smooth process.
As the Caleta approached shore, all collected data was successfully transferred via
the LEO-Net to the shore station. The Caleta returned around 4:00 PM, and already
just minutes later, fully processed data was being posted to the internet. TOW Data from today!!!

Selected Pictures from Today

The orange instrument, called an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) is
used to measure transects of sea currents. This instrument works much as a policeman's
radar does. It's metal housing is called a Majid and floats the ADCP along the side
of the boat. |
 |
The SODAR located at the Rutgers Marine Field Station Dormitory. |
 |
The towed MiniBat is used to collect profile data of sea water salinity, temperature,
and fluorescence from surface to bottom continuously. |
