On
Wednesday, July 14, 2004, Graduate Students and Staff Researchers from
Rutgers University's Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences traveled to
Long Beach Island's Center for Arts & Sciences to speak to the local
community.
The Long Beach Township Police
Department extends an invitation each year helping keep communication
lines open between the university and residents on oceanographic and
biological research involving the New Jersey Shore.
Jennifer Bosch, Louis Bowers,
Donglai Gong, Jessie Sebbo and Hugh Roarty made a
presentation,
touching upon the use of CODAR which is a
coastal radar that uses radio waves to measure ocean surface currents;
ocean gliders which move up and down the water column collecting data
including temperature, salinity, particles and phytoplankton; and the
utilization of satellite data products such as sea surface temperature and
chlorophyll.
