Today's Atmospheric/Ocean Weather

Morning Evening

ATMOSPHERE --- Southwesterlies dominated the day, a very humid and hazy day. Temps were in the mid 80s, and skies were very cloudy by 1:00 PM. The SPECTIR flew today.

Plots of today's weather data from the Field Station are shown below. Times are in GMT.

OCEAN -- The upwelling continues to subside and increased thermal stratification is evident within the research grid. Phytoplankton biomass is high along the entire thermocline moving offshore. Chlorophyll contours this density layer with shallow peak at 4 meters inshore transitioning to 10 meters approximately 6 km offshore. The combination of ship data and data collected from satellites suggest that the peak chlorophyll along the thermocline is the result of a previous bloom that was advected or transported onshore over the last 4 days.
